RHS approved roses – AGM

For some years the RHS has awarded their AGM (Award of Garden Merit) to rose varieties that have proven to be good healthy garden roses. Now, at last we have a definitive list, provided by the RHS and courtesy of Daniel Myhill and Martin Stott.

Member’s Pruning and Rosecare Day

In response to our Member’s Survey last year, we are pleased to offer members our first Pruning and general Rosecare Day at Sunbury Walled Garden in London.

We are offering members the chance to hone their pruning skills and learn a few rosecare basics from some of our experienced society members.

The rose garden at Sunbury consists of over 400 roses that we replanted in 2018 plus a similar number of older roses that are scheduled to be replaced this Autumn so there will be plenty of opportunity to practice. We’ll look at care of your pruning equipment including sharpening. We’re still in bare root season so we’ll also be looking at planting and in anticipation of a beaitiful rose filled summer, feeding and dead heading to keep your roses in tip top condition.

The day will start at 10.30am at the garden with introductions and a session on care of your pruning equipment and a look at pruning techniques

At lunch time we will go up to nearby Squires Garden Centre for a light buffet lunch in The Orangerie

Then it’s back out in the garden for hands – on pruning. We have a few roses to plant on the day so will be discussing and showing how to deal with a bare root rose.

A chat about the garden’s feeding and rosecare regime will round up the day.

At the Walled Garden the Gallery Cafe, part of the Embroidery Gallery, will be open all day for impromptu teas and coffees.

We plan on having a very informal day with plenty of opportunity to try your hand at pruning and ask as many questions as you need.

In case of inclement weather we will repair to the Orangerie where we will be able to do some limited practical activity and  a programme or two on a relevant subject.

The cost to members, for the day, which will include a light buffet lunch will be £10.00

Tudor Rose Awards

This year’s Tudor Rose Awards have all been given to their recipients . . . . . finally!

Tracking down our winners this year was a real challenge.

The Gold Awards were presentented to Ray and Pauline Martin, for their work behind the scenes in the running of the Society and National amateur shows at the AGM in April

Also presented at the AGM were two Silver Medals; one to Jim Anderson for his continued hard work in so many rose events in the North of the country and for his (and loyal wife Carole) help at the Harrogate and Yorkshire Shows. Another Silver medal went to Champion Amateur breeder Maurice Guest. Many of Maurice’s roses are available from Style Roses in Holbeach, Lincolnshire,

The third Silver Tudor Rose Award went to Amateur rose breeding legend, Ronnie Rawlins. Ronnie has a large catalogue of roses in commerce, many also available through Style Roses. He was also hugely influencial in the development of Persica Hybrids with the breeding of his variety Belting Pink which feature in the bloodline of many of today’s Persica releases and provide their remondancy. Jim Anderson kindly travelled to Ronnie’s Yorkshire home to present him with his deserved award.

The final Silver Tudor Award went finally to Dave Kenny from Tully in ROI. We tracked Dave down to Rochford’s Hertford nursery were he was attending the International rose trials. Colin Squire did the honour, capping a fine year for Dave during which he was awarded a Fellowship of the Northern Ireland Rose Society and on the day also won a Trialground Certificate for his variety KENcheers.

As previously reported, we also tracked our Dean Hole Medal Winner, Michael Marriott, to the Rose Monograph event run by the National Trust at Mottisfont. Colin Squire was also on hand to present Michael with his medal recognising a life in roses.

How Not to Take Cuttings

Many will have seen the recently posted videos on Facebook and Youtube showing ‘miracle’ methods of taking rose cuttings; getting great results in just a few short weeks. Based on the theory that if it looks too good to be true . . . . . . . . .  Jason, from Fraser Valley Roses, himself an experienced and respected rosarian has produced an ‘antidote’ video to add a balanced perspective to these ‘How to’  videos.
